WHAT IS A BROAD AXE?

The Broad Axe (Old Norse: breiðøx) is a large broad-headed axe. The Petersen Type M tends to feature a wide, thin blade with pronounced "horns" at the toe and heel of the blade. The wide and thin profile of the blade made these types of axes excellent at cutting.

As tools, they would have been used to shape logs when creating beams through a process known as hewing.

Broad Axes also made fantastic weapons (especially when the shaft was extended to 0.9 - 1.7 m. Also known as the Dane Axe). The broad, thin blade was particularly effective against cavalry and shields, as a long powerful cut could be delivered.

Predominately used through the Viking Age, the broad axe was adopted by the William the Conqueror in his invasion of England, and can be seen featuring on the Bayeux Tapestry. The Broad Axe / Dane Axe became a specified weapon of the Varangian Guard.

CARING FOR YOUR AXE

Our axes come with a small tin of our special linseed oil and beeswax blend, ensuring they're treated before they even reach you.

Although high carbon steel offers exceptional durability, it's not completely water-resistant. To maintain your axe's pristine condition, it's essential to regularly apply oil or our wax blend. This simple care routine ensures your axe remains in top-notch shape, keeping it looking its best for years to come.

Please Note: Not all axes are made for chopping wood. Wood chopping axes have a specially designed widened axe blade to withstand the forces applied with splitting wood. Using an axe in any manner other than that it has been designed for can result in damage.
