Ivar's Seax
Ivar's Seax has been beautifully crafted using the highest-quality materials. The blade has been hand-forged using carbon steel to achieve the broken-back seax shape associated with the Vikings. This seax features a steel guard with blacked wood inlay. The handle has been hand-crafted from a horn with a steel cap. Ivar's Seax is the perfect length for an all-around utility Seax and fitting for even the most fearsome warlord. The hand-sewn leather sheathe featured a traditional "peace tie", a fastening method intending to keep the blade being drawn in moments of heated exchange.
The whole seax has been finished with our signature beeswax and linseed oil blend, which helps protect, grip aids, and brings out the wood and horn’s natural colouring. The handmade scabbard has been hand-sewn and finished masterfully.
These are an attempt to recreate what likely would have been used in the Viking Age. The straight-back-shaped seax with a curved blade has been the most popular blade shape in Scandinavia throughout the Viking Age.
Who was Ivar the Boneless?
Ivar the Boneless was a Danish Viking Chieftain whose life is shrouded in myth, legend and (more recently) popular culture. Unlike most Viking raiders before him, Ivar sought conquest over petty "smash and grab" style raids. His peculiar nickname likely came from a hereditary skeletal deformity or perhaps an inability to walk. We will never know for sure.
Chiefly motivated by revenge for the death of their "father" Ragnar Lothbrok, Ivar and his brothers, Halfdan and Hubba, led conquests in Ireland, Mercia and Northumbria and headed the "Great Heathen Army". In 866 AD, Ivar captured the capital city of York, and in 867 AD, King Aella (believed responsible for Ragnar's death) was captured and sentenced to the bloodiest of all Viking deaths: the Blood Eagle.
In 873, Ivar was killed while on a raid in Ireland. He had earned the title "King of the Norsemen of all Ireland and Britain".
* We need to remember that many of the details we have about Ivar the Boneless are derived from myth and legend. We know of a successful Viking warlord, but his ties to the mythical figure Ragnar Lothbrok could be a later addition to add validity to Ivar's campaigns.

WHAT IS A SEAX?
The word Seax appears to be an Old English / Anglo Saxon word for knife. The term has come to cover a wide variation of different knives. The most common characteristics are:
- - A large single edged blade.
- - A tang in the centre line of blade. Often inserted into an organic material handle.
- - The scabbard (and blade) worn horizontally on the belt.
- - The blade tends to face upwards when in the scabbard.
SEAX CARE
Seaxes are supplied with a small tin of our signature linseed oil and beeswax blend, as well as being treated before being shipped.
High Carbon steel is not 100% water resistant, and requires the regular application of oil (or our wax blend) to keep the seax looking its best.
