PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Viking Splitting Axe

Our Viking Splitting Axes have been expertly crafted using the highest-quality materials, and are available in three sizes. The head has been forged using a special Railroad Steel to achieve the "Petersen Type M" shape associated with the Viking Age, but also make the axe tough enough to split wood. The shaft has been hand-crafted from Ash, and sculpted to give added grip when chopping or splitting kindling. Then finished with our signature beeswax and linseed oil blend, which helps protect, aids in grip, and brings out the wood's natural grain. Each axe is supplied with a hand-sewn leather sheath that connects with push buttons for quick and easy removal.

These axes have a wedge shaped blade, specially designed to withstand the impact created by splitting wood. The wedge shaped head will also aid in forcing the wood to split axe the axe travels through. These are an attempt to recreate what likely would have been used in the Viking Age.

WHAT IS A SKEGGOX?

The word Skeggox in Old Norse means Skegg for beard and øx for axe, so its easy to see why this type of has become well know as a "Bearded Axe".

Although this type of axe is now synonymous with the Viking Age, earliest record date back to the 6th century. The bearded design of the axe head allows for a longer cutting blade, whilst also keeping the overall weight down. This design also allows the user to grab behind the blade when planing or shaving wood, giving greater control. The bearded axe was primarily a woodworking too for hewing planks, and was a key tool for boat building

When used in battle, the bearded portion of the Skeggox could be used to drag shields and weapons down to leave an opening for attack, or even to completely disarm the enemy.

CARING FOR YOUR AXE

Our axes come with a small tin of our special linseed oil and beeswax blend, ensuring they're treated before they even reach you.

Although high carbon steel offers exceptional durability, it's not completely water-resistant. To maintain your axe's pristine condition, it's essential to regularly apply oil or our wax blend. This simple care routine ensures your axe remains in top-notch shape, keeping it looking its best for years to come.

Please Note: Not all axes are made for chopping wood. Wood chopping axes have a specially designed widened axe blade to withstand the forces applied with splitting wood. Using an axe in any manner other than that it has been designed for can result in damage.
