What was the Blood Eagle?

According to the late Skaldic poetry, the Blood Eagle was a method ritual execution. The victim would be laid prone, their ribs severed from the spine, and their lungs pulled from the cavity to create the perception of wings. It's unclear whether these written accounts are literacy invention, mistranslation or an actual historic practice.
